August 2026 promises to be one of the most exciting months of the year for skywatchers. From a deep partial solar eclipse and the peak of the Perseid meteor shower to a partial lunar eclipse at the end of the month, there is plenty to see from the UK.

The nights gradually become longer during August, making it easier to enjoy the stars, planets and deep-sky objects of the late-summer sky. Whether you observe with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope, this month’s sky offers something for everyone.

August’s Three Headline Events

Three major events dominate the astronomical calendar this month. Each has its own full observing guide elsewhere in this edition of Exploring The Night Sky.

Partial Solar Eclipse – 12 August

On the evening of 12 August, the Moon will pass across the face of the Sun. Observers throughout the UK will see a deep partial solar eclipse, with a large portion of the Sun hidden at maximum eclipse. The precise timing and amount of coverage will depend on the observer’s location.

A clear view towards the western horizon will be especially important because the event takes place during the evening, when the Sun will be getting lower in the sky.

Solar Viewing Warning

Never look directly at the Sun without certified solar-viewing protection. Ordinary sunglasses, smoked glass, photographic film and improvised filters are not safe.

Telescopes, binoculars and camera lenses must have a suitable solar filter securely fitted over the front of the instrument before being pointed towards the Sun.

Perseid Meteor Shower – Night of 12–13 August

After the solar eclipse, attention turns from the evening Sun to the night sky. The Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak overnight on 12–13 August.

The absence of bright moonlight around the peak should create favourable viewing conditions. From a dark location, observers may see frequent meteors, including occasional bright fireballs. The best results will usually come after midnight and before dawn.

No telescope is required. Meteors can appear anywhere in the sky, so the best method is to find a dark, open location, allow your eyes time to adjust and watch as much of the sky as possible.

Partial Lunar Eclipse – 28 August

The month’s final major event occurs on 28 August, when part of the Full Moon passes through Earth’s dark central shadow. This produces a partial lunar eclipse.

Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is completely safe to watch with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope. Binoculars can give an especially attractive view as the curved edge of Earth’s shadow moves across the lunar surface.

The Moon in August 2026

The changing Moon is both an observing target and an important part of planning other observations. A bright Moon can wash out faint galaxies, nebulae and meteors, while the nights around New Moon provide the darkest skies.

Last Quarter

6 August

Visible mainly after midnight and during the morning. This is a useful time for observing shadows along the lunar terminator.

New Moon

12 August

The Moon lies close to the Sun and is not visible in the normal night sky. Dark conditions make this an excellent period for meteor and deep-sky observing.

First Quarter

20 August

The Moon is prominent during the afternoon and evening. Craters and mountain ranges near the terminator show strong contrast.

Full Moon

28 August

The Moon appears fully illuminated and is visible for most of the night. A partial lunar eclipse also occurs on this date.

The Planets in August

Most of the month’s planetary activity takes place before sunrise. Observers will need an unobstructed horizon and should begin looking while the sky is still reasonably dark.

Saturn

Saturn is the easiest major planet to follow during the month. It can be seen during the later part of the night and before dawn. Through a telescope, its rings appear unusually narrow because of their current angle to Earth.

Mars

Mars is a morning object. Its warm orange colour makes it relatively easy to distinguish from nearby stars, although it will not yet appear especially large through a telescope.

Mercury

Mercury is best placed during the early part of August, appearing low in the morning twilight. A clear eastern or north-eastern horizon will be required.

Jupiter

Jupiter begins to return to the morning sky, but it remains very low and may be difficult to see against the brightening twilight. Its visibility should improve later in the year.

Uranus and Neptune

Uranus and Neptune are also present in the morning sky, although neither is a straightforward naked-eye target. Uranus may be found with binoculars from a sufficiently dark location, while Neptune normally requires a telescope and an accurate star chart.

The Summer Triangle

One of the easiest patterns to recognise in the August sky is the Summer Triangle. It is not an official constellation, but an asterism formed by three bright stars:

  • Vega in the constellation Lyra
  • Deneb in the constellation Cygnus
  • Altair in the constellation Aquila

During August evenings, the triangle stands high in the sky and acts as a useful signpost to several constellations and deep-sky objects. Vega is normally the easiest of its three stars to identify.

Cygnus and the Milky Way

Deneb marks the tail of Cygnus the Swan. The main stars of Cygnus form a cross-shaped pattern that is sometimes called the Northern Cross. The star Albireo marks the Swan’s head.

Albireo is a rewarding target for a small telescope. It appears as a beautiful pair of contrasting stars, commonly described as golden and blue.

The Milky Way runs through Cygnus, creating a rich region for binocular observing. Under a dark rural sky it may appear as a pale, misty band, while binoculars reveal that the area is filled with countless stars.

The Andromeda Galaxy

As August progresses, the Andromeda Galaxy becomes increasingly well placed during the evening. Also known as Messier 31 or M31, it is the nearest major spiral galaxy to the Milky Way, at a distance of around 2.5 million light-years.

From a dark location it can sometimes be seen without optical aid as a faint, elongated patch. Binoculars make it easier to detect, while a telescope shows its bright central region. The galaxy extends much farther across the sky than its bright central glow might suggest.

How to Find M31

  1. Locate the distinctive W-shaped constellation Cassiopeia in the north-eastern sky.
  2. Find the Great Square of Pegasus farther towards the east or south-east.
  3. Follow the chain of stars extending from the Great Square into the constellation Andromeda.
  4. Use binoculars to search above the middle of that stellar chain for a soft, oval glow.

The Double Cluster in Perseus

Between Cassiopeia and Perseus lies one of the finest binocular targets in the northern sky: the Double Cluster. It consists of two separate open star clusters, known as NGC 869 and NGC 884.

To the unaided eye under a dark sky, the pair may appear as a small, misty patch. Binoculars reveal two concentrations of stars, while a low-power telescope provides a particularly impressive view.

Use the W-shape of Cassiopeia as your starting point. The Double Cluster lies in the direction of Perseus, beneath the central part of Cassiopeia when the constellation is viewed in its familiar W orientation.

Your August Observing Checklist

  • Check the weather forecast before travelling.
  • Choose a safe location with a wide view of the sky.
  • Take a reclining chair or ground mat for meteor watching.
  • Wear warm layers; late-summer nights can become surprisingly cool.
  • Use a dim red torch to preserve your night vision.
  • Allow at least 20 minutes for your eyes to become dark-adapted.
  • Take binoculars for the Milky Way, Andromeda Galaxy and Double Cluster.
  • Keep a notebook or observing journal to record what you see.
  • Use only certified equipment when observing the solar eclipse.

Final Thoughts

August 2026 is an exceptional month for amateur astronomy. Its three headline events—the partial solar eclipse, Perseid meteor shower and partial lunar eclipse—would each be noteworthy on their own. Together, they make this one of the outstanding observing months of the year.

Beyond those major events, the Summer Triangle, the star fields of Cygnus, the Andromeda Galaxy and the Double Cluster provide excellent targets throughout the month. Most can be enjoyed with nothing more than the naked eye or a pair of binoculars.

You do not have to observe everything in a single night. Choose one or two targets, take your time and become familiar with that part of the sky. The more often you return, the easier it becomes to recognise the stars and find your way around the night sky.
